Simo Häyhä was nicknamed White Death by the Soviet Armed Forces during the Winter War of 1939-40 where the Soviet Union attacked Finland. In less than 100 days, White Death racked up 505 confirmed sniper kills in weather that was in between -4 degrees and -40 degrees fahrenheit. The majority of the war took place in a region known as Kolla with the Finnish outnumbered by the Soviets in many of the battles somewhere around 50 to 1. Kolla also happened to be where White Death spent years hunting and developing his skills as an outdoorsman.
White Death dressed in all white camoflauge, packed the snow around his sniper when firing to prevent puffs of snow when he shot, and continually kept snow in his mouth to prevent his exhaled breath from being seen. He would spend months in the forested, mountainous region of Kolla living off the land and sniping Soviet units.
After nicknaming him White Death, the Soviets sent a special task force to kill White Death. White Death killed them all. Then, the Soviets sent a team of countersnipers to kill White Death. White Death killed all of them, as well. Since no Soviet wanted to get anywhere near White Death and his iron-sighted "spitz," a remarkably outdated weapon and scope even in 1939, the Soviets just bombed everywhere they had intel on possible locations of White Death. He wasn't injured.
