Decisions

Debate is necessary for us to come to reasoned, agreed upon decisions that carry some legitimacy. And, thus far, no deadlines have passed in terms of voting on questions of how to run the league. However, I am fearful that we aren't going to actually come to a conclusion on any of the issues now confronting our game of champions. For instance, I count at least 3 issues that need to be resolved -- draft order, how to incorporate the newcomers into the league, and changes to the scoring system. We've heard from some of you on these issues. Some of you have not made your positions known. The draft order question seems to be relatively straight forward. It can be found within Digital's "One Slight Error" post. As of right now, the vote seems to be split 2-2 on that issue. Concerning the way we incorporate the newcomers into the league, I think we've heard from about 4 of you. That discussion can be found under the Commissioner's "Bleeding Kansas" post. The scoring settings debate can be found in Digital's "League Scoring Details" post. If you don't have an opinion, say so. Otherwise, we'd love to hear from you.

  1. I vote for the Second Wildcard; draft order to be determined when I acquire said powers. As far as incorporation a straight draft seems fair; no keepsies, no hold-ons, no Tony Romos. Why is there issue with the scoring? Shouldn't it just be the same as last year? If not, I vote Tyler decides because hes the comish. I might be able to vote on something if there was a ballot. How can we vote when we are still in comittee?

  3. Old,

Am I to understand that you are casting your votes for:

    1) second wildcard whereby you choose the draft order according to your own whims;

    2) doing away with the keeper league format entirely and just re-drafting; and

    3) keeping the scoring system as?

Or was the point of your "ballot" to voice your displeasure with the current disorganized manner in which we are deciding things?

Or are you just kind of old and grumpy?

  4. I realize now that I can not go through this season so half-heartedly. I am a gentleman.

1)I vote for Playoff Top 4 go first. Then everyone else based upon their regular season standings.
2)I vote for option one (1) outlined in previous posting.
3)I like changing the kick-off return scores.

  5. The big value of the keeper league is that we get to hold onto players for the cost of lesser draft picks. It's both a reward for finding a good player last year and obviously just to spice up the league. The question I pose to you gentlemen is if we allow Jim and Bebo to "keep" players at a lesser cost once we have submitted our keeps, are they kind of retroactively keeping players? I don't think that's the case, but if so, the Admiral will find himself torn between his social benevolence and outright hatred for retroactively keeping players.

I submit that we vote on whether Jim and Bebo keeping players is comparable to a retroactive keeper situation.

I think we're all a little too excited right now. Let's start by figuring out the draft order. I vote for straight regular season standings. Keeps it interesting for everyone for all weeks, and the playoffs require no motivating factor. If it takes more than 36 hours to finalize draft order, then I change my vote to the Buonadonna Supremacy. I will not comment further on incorporating Jim and Bebo and/or rule changes until we agree on draft order. Gentlemen, call my bluff.

  6. As of 6 o'clock central time this evening...I will be posting separate ballots. The first will deal with draft order. The second will deal with how to admit the players into the league. You will vote in the comments section of each ballot. At noon tomorrow (central time) the voting will end. Everyone needs to vote in order for this to work....how is that for disorganized.

  7. You can just create a poll on the side of the blog and fix a date and time for the poll to end. We are gentlemen, not savages. In fact, I will do it a little later tonight.

However, Jason makes a good point with the draft order. It make since to simplify this process and get something settled before we move on.

  8. Winston,

Quite the contrary my dear friend. I see no contradiction between being against the retroactive keeper league format you advocated just last year and promoting the idea that the newcomers have a chance to play on as level a playing field as is possible.

As to your comment that Jim and Bebo are being allowed to keep players at a "lesser cost," I'm not sure I follow. They will be giving up draft spots corresponding to those "kept" players in the same manner that we will.

As to your worries that my conscience may be bothered by the fact that (just maybe, though you yourself don't think so) the proposal now being considered is similar to the retroactive keeper league format you advocated last year, you may rest easy. My chief concern (though there were many) with your retroactive keeper league proposal last year was that people would be allowed to lay claim to players they had no right to. That concern does not come into play with the proposed format. We get to keep 2 players apiece, which would seem to coincide quite nicely with the fact that we adopted a 2-player keeper league format. Beyond those 2 players each of us keeps, no one has any sort of right to any other player. Thus, Jim and Bebo are left to pick from a pool of players that are not assigned to any particular team and that no one can legitimately claim any right to.

  9. By lesser cost, all I meant was that we obtained players last year and get to keep them for a lesser cost than their projected draft value (projected second rounder costs a third rounder). Bebo and Jim would similarly get to “keep” two leftover players at a discount despite not obtaining them by shrewd drafting, trading, or waiver wire work nor having to keep a roster spot open for that player through injuries over the course of the season.

Was that all just a big fat attempt to make me comment about something besides draft order? The above was merely a clerical comment, and I never believed I could avoid further comments anyway.
